New Agent Training at the FBI Academy

Curious how you will be trained to be an FBI Special Agent? The FBI has set up a rigorous training program to make sure new agents are prepared. Even though new recruits will have just undergone one of the most stringent interview processes (polygraph and all), there’s still a chance that the FBI Academy will reveal students that just aren’t quite ready for the prestigious role of FBI Special Agent.

New agent training (NAT) takes place at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Training lasts about 20 weeks and includes about 800 hours of classroom, virtual, and hand-on training. During this time, agents are trained in various areas of concentration:

  • Academics
    • Study law, ethics, interrogation, forensic science, and more.
  • Case Exercises
    • Follow a mock case from the first tip all the way to “case closed”
  • Firearms
    • Learn to carry and discharge Bureau-issued firearms safely and effectively
  • Operational Skills
    • Conduct real-life exercises to practice defensive tactics and surveillance
